Sign-Code Development Best Practices

The Academic Advisory Council for Signage Research and Education (AACSRE) publishes its Interdisciplinary Journal of Signage and Wayfinding twice a year. In its most recent issue, AACSRE 2017 chairperson Dawn Jourdan and Board member Eric Strauss contributed a paper entitled “Sign Code Development Process: Best Practices.” Both Jourdan and Strauss are professors of urban planning at their respective universities, Michigan State and Texas A&M. They were assisted by Texas A&M Master’s student Madeline Hunter. Much of the discussion focuses on the use of citizen participation in drafting sign codes. It also includes the results of a survey of planners as to how their sign codes have been developed. Read the article in its entirety at
